Prayer Plant Maranta Still Life On Canvas
Prayer Plant Maranta Still Life On Canvas
When I moved into a new home in 2021 a friend gave us a Prayer Plant, or a Maranta Fascinator, to give its official name. Aside from its striking red-veined leaves, the interesting thing about this Brazilian rainforest plant is that it folds upwards every evening, hence the prayer name.
I've always loved house plants and succulents, and while I often avoid more traditional still-life subjects, this plant's image fascinated me so much that I decided to paint it in full, having previously painted its leaves twice.
This latest version represents a slight change in style for me, utilising a more realistic shadow and depth, alongside the more-is-more aesthetic of maximalism. Bright colours and bold textures are all layered on top of each other, with the contrasting patterns of the checkered pink and turquoise wall, the terrazzo style base, and the natural patterns of the plant leaves all fighting for attention, with a summery colour palette that recalls David Hockney.
The end result is a bright and bold work that would brighten up any room in the house.
It is painted in acrylics and Posca pen on canvas.
