My latest pop art style painting on A4 paper depicts the logo of Black Cat Fireworks, a huge global company that has been producing fireworks for decades.

I can always remember seeing this logo around and loved the striking image of the hissing black cat set against a bright yellow background, with retro hand-drawn style lettering. However, it wasn't until recently that I found at that it was a company that actually made fireworks.

I decided to faithfully recreate the retro logo (they have since modified it slightly) as a one-off painting using the original three strong colours - yellow, red, and black. Like many of the original pop artists - Warhol, Lichtenstein, Johns - I enjoy the idea of recreating an everyday piece of industrial branding, taking it out of its original context, and turning it into a larger-scale bold piece of art that you can hang on your wall. A striking, nostalgic logo hopefully becomes a striking work of art, just in time for bonfire night and Halloween.

It is painted in acrylics on thick high quality A4 paper. I attempted to recreate the flat look of an industrial logo, but if you look at the close up photos you can see the texture of the acrylic paint that I used.

PLEASE NOTE: the painting doesn't come framed, but I've taken photos of it in a black A4 frame for display purposes.

I've been inspired to create work like this by classic pop artists like Andy Warhol, David Hockney, and Patrick Caulfield, but also by modern graphic designers.
